Blade Driver puts a new “spin” on crossbows
German cyberpunk weapons-maker Patrick Priebe has created another dangerous toy, and this one’s a doozy. Previously, he’s built things such as a laser-sighted wrist-mounted crossbow, and a hand-mounted flamethrower. His latest creation, the Blade Driver, is a full-size laser-sighted crossbow … oh yeah, and instead of shooting arrows, it shoots spinning rotary saw blades. Read More www.neverfail.co

Build your own motion-triggered “Internet of Things” camera
Adafruit’s “Internet of Things Camera” is a neat mashup of existing Arduino components into a versatile remote monitoring camera. The key here is in the word remote - a capability that’s granted by the inclusion of a first-generation Eye-Fi card, which is an SD card with built in Wi-Fi, that can upload images to your computer or other device, or better yet to a variety of photo-sharing websites such as Flickr. PayPal launches “Here” smartphone card reader
The profusion of apps for smartphones certainly seems to know no bounds, and while NFC based payment seems set to become the dominant form of cashless transaction, smartphone peripherals that allow users to swipe credit and debit cards still have a role to play. The most notable of these devices is Jack Dorsey’s Squaresystem and now, online payment giant Paypal has flexed its appreciable muscle and entered the fray with its new, triangular “Here” card reader, due initially for a limited release. Flexible, heat-dissipating parts for electronics from spider silk?
Over the years, we’ve seen Spiderman use his webbing to catch villains, swing between buildings, and even parachute from great heights. In all that time, however, the opportunity never came up for him to use it to conduct heat. As it turns out, it would have been perfect for the job. Although materials from living things generally don’t conduct heat well, a team of scientists from Iowa State University have discovered that spider silk does so 800 times better than any other organic material ever tested. Because the silk is also very strong and stretchable, it could have a number of applications in human technology. Read More www.neverfail.co

Wrist “piano” puts music at your fingertips

We’ve all drummed our fingers when impatient or bored, but the arrival of a wrist-mounted finger “piano” from Japan could change all that in a snap. It looks more like an EKG for your hand than a musical instrument but comes with a full octave of range - one note for each finger and three on the wrist unit. Read More www.neverfail.co
